I don't think the silence of those in the funeral carriage with Bloom is solely because of disdain. Bloom's idea of the "good death" is in direct contradiction to Catholic ideas, which include enough consciousness of death to confess and receive the Last Rites.
Bloom is nominally (but nominally only) a Catholic, but he's clearly not absorbed the Church's ideas of the good death. This is a matter which emphasizes the alienation of Bloom from the others.

Legend vs. Myth. Well, without cheating by looking them up, I tend to think of legends as specific tales of outrageous import where myths are... hmmmm, the same. Well, I think you've hit upon something clearly above me.

Just FYI: I recently ordered this round of lectures to accompany my nightly 1/2 walks. I suppose the pillar in the picture is the Nelson column? http://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/joyce-s-ulysses.html
On myth and legends - legends, to my mind, are stories of historical figures, endowing them with powers and abilities above those of ordinary humans. It is my belief that myths grow out of these legends when they acquire a dimension of the supernatural. That is, legendary figures may become demi-gods and then, perhaps, gods themselves. Legends are personal. Myths are archetypal. My take, anyway.

Brian's right - Bloom has unconsciously said something shocking, which is why their 'wide open eyes' look at him.
On 'adelite', Harald Beck writes that Joyce first wrote 'puce' and then 'adeleide' - a purple dye. Bloom is thinking of 'adeleide' but has made a slip.
'Whatever Joyce’s reason was for eventually turning ‘adelaide’ into ‘adelite’ (it would not be be the first instance in Ulysses when his hero is verbally accident-prone) it seems rather unlikely that he meant us to believe that Bloom uses the name of a rare mineral only recently discovered in Sweden in his interior monologue to put across that Dignam’s nose was coloured grey through drink. The genesis of this passage indicates that the change intended was from red(hot) to purple.'
